Relocation of a bridge on the Manchester Ship Canal

During the redevelopment of Salford Quays, Thos Storey carried out the relocation of a 560 tonne - 100 year old - railway swing bridge in order for it to be ‘recycled’ as a footbridge 1,500 metres further down the canal.

68 Uniflotes were used to first lift and then carry the structure to its new position. The move – which was delayed by several days by the threat of high winds - took just four hours - when permission was finally given by the Port Authority - using 4 Thos Storey Motorflote propulsion units and an ocean going tug acting as a brake.

All of the support steel work, floatation equipment and Motorflote were manufactured by Thos Storey and the project attracted nationwide interest from the media.
