The potential to reduce straw usage and the benefits to staff safety are key reasons why Northern farmers value the Spread-a-Bale, says Steve Dunning, from Paxtons, which is exhibiting the machine at the Great Yorkshire Show this week (Stand 32).

“Many of our customers reckon they can save 15% - 20% on bedding straw, and appreciate the fact that they can spread straw from outside the pen, which avoids the risks of getting into the pen with livestock”.

Tom Robinson from Spread-a-Bale, says the straw saving is potentially valuable in this region:

“Livestock farmers who don’t produce their own straw can reduce what they buy each year. Conversely, arable farmers who do produce straw could have more to sell to neighbouring livestock farmers – in both cases this makes a valuable contribution to profitability.

“The ability to spread straw from outside the pen is especially appreciated by those running bull beef units, for whom manually spreading bedding straw can be very hazardous”.
